Dining room evolution

Untitled

Here's the house when I first moved in, just bare, sticky floors in the kitchen and dining room where golden carpet had reigned for 30 or so years. When I got here I was totally broke, so I found some carpet sample tiles at the local furniture store on the cheap and cut each to fit a square tile pattern... this took nearly 80 hours (shown below), but fate didn't have it in its plans I guess, because all that work got destroyed in a small accident (I'll say no more to protect the innocent), and eventually I just replaced the hard-won tile job with a simple tan carpet.

And below is the most recent dining room incarnation. It's definitely a little more traditional than Panton chairs and a 50s chrome table, but I was able to keep it funky by painting the cabinets and lining the interiors with reclaimed lumber. Inside each are mostly thrift store finds, a rolling pin hanging rack I made, and two antique windows a contractor friend was replacing and let me have. Above, the 'Egg Room' sign was formerly a part of my parents' horse barn, which was for years a chicken hatchery before we moved in.

Wold's World

They're sort of like what would happen if Dr. Seuss had been a furniture designer instead of a children's book author. I don't know Thomas Wold, but I picture him at rummage sales and thrift shops rooting around for the perfect wood furnishings to paint and put together... coming up with amazing color schemes. You rock, Thomas Wold!

Some inspirations from Casper James

Casper James had me at "living room," this living room to be exact. Maybe it was meant to be, me and Casper being contacts on flickr. Perhaps it was pre-written in the cosmos. But, oooh! every time I look through my favorites I'm drawn to this image:

Another use for man pants

before and after, upcycle

The official pant of funeral goers in rural Nebraska? Well, duh, the patterned polyester suit. And where do these land after the funeral goer has had a funeral of their own? Good old thrift shop. That's where I snatch them up much to the amusement of the church lady volunteers. They're just sure I have a stock pile of really bad ties and really bad pants at home... and they might be right. Polyester hoarding, the newest, hippest thing to hit mental disorders in a long time.
