A Very Vintage Wedding
This morning has been entirely spent scanning an antique marriage certificate I found on an estate sale and replacing the photos with images I took a few months ago of my dear friend Kristin and her boyfriend, Chris. I'm not sure how she'll react to her face on a marriage certificate, but she and Chris have such cute mugs I couldn't resist. I listed this service on my etsy site just now, with the promise of a tiny photo tutorial for those who wish to have their own mugs on a personalized antique certificate.

Gypsy Soul
I get just a few miles down the road and I begin to feel the freedom I've missed so much, stuck in a small farm town. Everything's exciting, a grocery store with pomegranates, mangos and butternut squash, and already, things are looking up.
I hang all my problems on objects and buildings: trees, cows, farmhouses, I hang fear, anxiety, insecurity and anything that wants to creep into my mind and ask me to dwell. As soon as I pass that object or animal, the problem linked to it fades into the rearview mirror. Once they've dissolved into the past, I'm free to fall in love with interstates, motel signs, old vehicles left to rust and become a marker on a desolate highway. The people who regularly drive by here know exactly how many minutes from this old Ford their turn off is, and without recognizing the connection, start physically readjusting for the turn or slowing for a stop ahead.
I've heard many artists reflect that some of their best thinking is done in the car, and i feel like 'people like us,' people with antennae on their heads, the empaths, the sensitive and introspective, pick up too many crossed messages when we sit still; the movement lets us flow through energy, rather than getting someone's weird juju stuck on us.
A psychic once told me that Vegas has an energy all its own... Las Vegas literally means, 'the meadows,' and it's a concave valley, a bowl with mountains all the way around. She said the energy swirls here, and all the hopes they bring in on one plane after another, all the sad, exhausted hangover feelings travel back out. It's interesting, and while I'm still fresh here from traveling, I'm making an effort to observe these feelings and see how they're unique from the relaxed way I feel in Nebraska. And I'm making photographs... hundreds already, and I can't wait to download and show you these things I'm unable to put into words. Sometimes pointing the lens at something, stopping, breathing, observing and reaching out through it to grab at the feelings that don't fit into words.

With Halloween a-comin' I decided to go way out there with my design inspirations for the day. I'm so thrilled to readily access so many artists via the internet; when I went to graduate school in '02, it seemed to get seen an artist had to be in NYC or LA, and extremely connected to the scene, which is often opposite to some very talented people who are either reclusive or just prefer to stay away from scenes.
What do you think? Are you into a scene or prefer to play voyeur? Do you find it easier to connect and put your work out there with the use of the internet?

Inspired by Vintage: Vintage Engagement
I received an email a few weeks ago from a girl looking for a wedding photographer. I had a good feeling about her right away and ran to check out her Engagement Board on Pinterest to see what kind of photos she was looking for. I was thrilled to see a bunch of quirky, funny and cute photos. My favorite kind of shoot is with a couple or a family willing to go wild experimenting and enjoying-- each other, me, the time we spend together creating... because it's not just 'the photographer' who creates the images; the whole shoot really relies on a group effort.
Everything started to come together and though I hadn't intended the 'fairy tale' vibe, it just started happening in editing the images. The quilt above is an antique log cabin style, just a beat up quilt I found on an auction. I took a ton of props to the shoot from my etsy shop, a pink vintage Coleman cooler, an old guitar, vintage picnic baskets and several other quilts, and when Seth picked up that guitar and started playing, I was surprised. He was fantastic. I think I fell in love with both of them!
