When you look at this living room, you don't assume I live in rural Nebraska, do you? Now that you know that, you assume my neighbors assume the worst. You'd be correct. There's one fucking good thing about Nebraska though, and it's all I can think of: I'm completely free of distractions. 80 hours spent on a coffee table and 80 more spent rhinestoning a vintage Mexican restaurant pirate ship? Good. Gives me something to do.

I'm debating reupholstering that gigantor Chesterfield-esque sectional. What do you think? I think part of it should be a crisp white canvas duck material, and the rest maybe a patch work of different stuff I have... 50s curtain fabric, a gold sequined material, maybe even cut apart some thrift store fur coats and add them in. What do you think? Everyone's telling me to leave it, because reupholstery work like this is so damn daunting, but what the hell. What's life for if not to run into a difficult project a little bit fearlessly, right?

I l.o.v.e. it!I loves me some Vegas decoratin. When I came across this gem, I wasn't so intrigued by the house (there aren't tons of interesting houses there architecturally, except maybe for the Scotch 80s and some of the homes on/near Alta), but the decor! It's like someone stole pictures from my brain of the perfect kitsch and married it all into one place. See for yourself. More photos after the break!
Living room remodel and a couple of found pics of a tutu in the light behind my granny's wicker headboard. I'm just living inside this project right now... every piece wants to be perfect. I need about 40 more uninterrupted hours to rhinestone my pirate ship, finish sewing curtains, painting furniture and curtain rods, and oh... reupholstering my new chesterfield sectional... I might need more than 40 hours for that project...Jonnie Andersenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12258365828172740146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157980099200759598.post-4873025305271198022013-02-26T12:39:00.001-08:002013-02-26T16:50:18.292-08:00Arrrg, get me some friggin' Ikea...
Do you know that I live farther from an Ikea store than most Canadians? Yep, true, dead center betwixt the one in Chicago and the one in Dallas. Either is a 14 hour trip. Sure, mapquest says Chicago's 4 hours closer, but when you get up there the traffic makes up for it quick. So I'm reduced to occasionally finding something (like the rug shown) worth paying an ebayer extra to run out to the store and ship to me. I would like to go to an actual store at some point... I have such big dreams! Anyway, what does a person do out here, in an Ikea-less village, and four restaurants and one stoplight, 60 miles from a McDonald's? Well, we bedazzle vintage Mexican restaurant decor, that's what. I took this crazy big (heavy, too) pirate ship and spraypainted it white before getting a hot glue burn (or a thousand) putting these little stones on it. Did I mention I ran out of them, and had to drive 3 hours to a Hobby Lobby? The pirate ship is far from done, and I'm thinking maybe it needs some kind of light pointed at it for a disco ball effect. Meh, I don't know. I'll post more pics when she's done.Jonnie Andersenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12258365828172740146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157980099200759598.post-30594117886118736762013-02-23T20:54:00.001-08:002013-02-23T20:55:16.179-08:00Boring ass tan...My living room was two shades of boring ass tan. Now it's Dutch Boy Ultra White.... or just "unmixed paint" as some would call it. But I sure did find a beautiful bright chartreuse for the window ledges. After upcycling a vintage oval mirror into a chalk clock, this room's on its way.
I came across this little gem today in my mom's family album. That's my ma on the right there, with the rockabilly haircut and dress, sitting with my Aunt Paula, Aunt Marlyn, Uncle Tom and a mystery girl, there in the pinkish dress. How FABULOUS are those curtains, the French Bulldog, my uncle's suspenders and my aunt's dress (far left)? This is one of my favorites.

On the left is the original scan; the photo was hot pink! I scanned it and took it into photoshop, but I think I'm going to stick with the original... the colors may be whack, but I'm a lover of original flaws. . . everything takes me back to the Velveteen Rabbit. And I could go on a tirade about "people and things earning their scars" and the glory of getting "loved up til your eyes pop out and your fur gets worn," but I'll save it for another day. For now, I'll just say that the vintage actions for photoshop are great, but I'll always have a deep affinity for film.
My niece Ainsley just turned one and for her birthday she got this huge furry tan bear. It was instantly named 'Ted' for the movie-bear it resembles. Ainsley and Ted have been pretty inseparable since meeting, and every time she sees him she jumps on him and cuddles him. This summer I'm thinking I need to do a whole series of Ainsley and Ted hanging out together, possibly the bear doing naughty things around the house he 'blames' on Ainsley... haha.

Here's the house when I first moved in, just bare, sticky floors in the kitchen and dining room where golden carpet had reigned for 30 or so years. When I got here I was totally broke, so I found some carpet sample tiles at the local furniture store on the cheap and cut each to fit a square tile pattern... this took nearly 80 hours (shown below), but fate didn't have it in its plans I guess, because all that work got destroyed in a small accident (I'll say no more to protect the innocent), and eventually I just replaced the hard-won tile job with a simple tan carpet.

And below is the most recent dining room incarnation. It's definitely a little more traditional than Panton chairs and a 50s chrome table, but I was able to keep it funky by painting the cabinets and lining the interiors with reclaimed lumber. Inside each are mostly thrift store finds, a rolling pin hanging rack I made, and two antique windows a contractor friend was replacing and let me have. Above, the 'Egg Room' sign was formerly a part of my parents' horse barn, which was for years a chicken hatchery before we moved in.
...and taking some photos around the house, working my styling skills. I made the tufted headboard above with curtains that came with my home when I bought it, some diy covered buttons, a scrap of dense foam and a piece of plywood. Pillows are upcycled from vintage quilts, dresses, doilies, men's western snap button shirts and vintage ties.

This morning has been entirely spent scanning an antique marriage certificate I found on an estate sale and replacing the photos with images I took a few months ago of my dear friend Kristin and her boyfriend, Chris. I'm not sure how she'll react to her face on a marriage certificate, but she and Chris have such cute mugs I couldn't resist. I listed this service on my etsy site just now, with the promise of a tiny photo tutorial for those who wish to have their own mugs on a personalized antique certificate.

Click the see more link below to learn...
HOW TO MAKE OPTIMUM IMAGES FOR YOUR CERTIFICATE:

Start with two foxes. Then take them outdoors.* Take several images of each person from eye level. If they're super tall or short (Chris is sooo much taller than me), get on a small step ladder or a chair, or have the tall person squat just a bit, so you're not looking right up into "full nostril." This is never a good look. Definitely don't have them just point their head down and be weary of the "chin is in" -- this makes for a double, in my case triple, chin. These two are super thinny, so I didn't even need to, but I had them stick their chins out and actually sort of stretch towards the camera... this is a totally legit thing to do in single person pics, where you need a head and shoulders type shot.
*Indoors would work as well, but use a very well-lit room; have your model stand next to a window getting that fine gorgeous light on them... take a lot if you do this, and make sure to look at each image for glasses-glare (I can't remove this) or lines across the face (deep shadows). Don't have your model stand directly in front of the window, durr, because they're going to be dark while the window will be a big, bright rectangle.
Try to make their face take up at least 1/8 of the picture. I don't want you to get so close that what you've eaten for lunch becomes an issue, or their face becomes distorted, but within 3 feet, depending on your camera/lens, is generally a good rule. I certainly don't need their feet for goodness sake! Remember to take them separately. Your bride friend and her fiancee sure made a great photo at the bar last night, in the dark, with a bright flash,* cheek to cheek, but in this case, it will just look awkward when there is some random hair hanging out the side of the groom's face!
*Flash! Oh, that naughty, naughty burst of light which will make anyone with glasses no longer have half of their beautiful eye because of the glare. If you're unable to control your flash, and it decides when to go off, and it keeps doing so, that's your key to grab your models and move outside.*
*Outside! You tricky beast. If the sun sits directly overhead when you do this, you could have squinty eye (if they're having to peer into it), or worse, the pattern of your lovely oak tree making your model awkward and splotchy. Find a spot with even light, and if you're not sure, just keep trying til you find a place where there aren't dramatic shadows on the faces of your foxes.
** I totally think you'll be golden; I've just decided to be extremely over-explanatory here, so there's no frustration about sending me pics and me having to send back an oops note, thusly making you get together with your models or your cameraman/woman again.

If you already have great photos, great! If you feel like your photos aren't the best, but they'll totally "do" for what you're wanting this for, no problem! I just want to make sure you have the tools you'll need if you want yours to look like my example.
Check out their site for more moving images made with a combination of video and stills, and put in gif format so the motion is continuous. It's an elegant response to those horrible glitter gifs we used to see on myspace. Remember those? With the unicorns and all that, sayings like: 'thanks for the add' and every bit as tacky as the 'someecards' we're being endlessly tortured by now on facebook.
I got my tests back yesterday and my boobs will go on. I found a lump about a month ago today after having one of my awkward 'Medium' dreams where someone had cancer, I just didn't know who it was. Awoke from the dream only to find a lump and totally catastrophize. If you don't know what catastrophizing is, it's what people are doing today who were strongly convinced that if Obama won a 2nd term, the entire earth would explode. I kind of want to yell at them, "Get a grip! If you want a real scare, try on a cancer scare or try living in a place where testing and health care aren't very available!" I'm happy about our President's 2nd term, and hoping, fingers crossed, we'll get an excellent health care plan figured out in the next four. Every single person in the United States deserves appropriate and proper, reasonably priced care.Jonnie Andersenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12258365828172740146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157980099200759598.post-24591772351635654782012-11-06T14:09:00.004-08:002012-11-08T06:27:06.592-08:00Contemplating Holiday Gifts

Seana and Lils met me today at Tule Springs in North Las Vegas (pronounced too-ey), a spot that barely reminds me of anywhere near here. It's actually... sort of... Nebraska-ish. These natural springs were visited by large prehistoric mammals in an era when the southern Nevada area was much cooler and wetter. Fossil remains of extinct mammoths, bison, horses, camels, giant sloths and other animals have been found in Tule Springs.

I photographed the adorable Corinna and Kyler this morning out at Calico Basin, near Red Rock just outside of Las Vegas. The whole area out there is soooo beautiful, and photoing these two cute girls was a blast. Five more shoots tomorrow, and a few over the weekend, then they'll send me packin' back to Nebraska. Vegas is making me want to stay a little longer.Jonnie Andersenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12258365828172740146noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157980099200759598.post-40201460780415307522012-10-18T21:10:00.000-07:002012-11-04T22:05:23.741-08:00Vegas GypsyWhen I tell people I lived in Vegas for seven years, their minds instantly flash to some sort of image created by the people who brought you casinos, rather than an up and coming downtown, an indie music scene, an ever growing arts community, which finally is getting its due with support from Zappos and even a few downtown casinos. Today we found one of the greatest new addition to the downtown arts district: Gypsy Caravan. A full sized stuffed lion (with a disclaimer he died of natural causes), circus signs, dinosaur statues, a fully stocked vintage boot room, and some 60s hanging lights we were dying over. Everywhere I turned, fabulous! The endearing photos were in the entry, and I fell in loooove with these dancing kids.
Besides, I was virtually the only person in either of these states without something strapped to my roof. This had to change. I needed... furniture... sporting equipment... something. You're pretty much an outcast in these states without a Toyota SUV or a Subaru Wagon with something on top bragging about your physical prowess. But enough about that: Here's Green River Thrift.

This green clad thrift store is run by a group of local volunteers, and supports the local Boys and Girls Club. There's no tax on your buys, since it is run as a non-profit. In the main room are murals (after the break) created by a local artist and the preacher's daughter, so I'm told. In the 'bling bling' room, I found some wild cowboy snap shirts, a rainbow clutch, and a belt with some animals resembling the ones I've seen so far on this trip. Bling bling was also full of 80s wedding dresses and some very puffy prom gowns. Outside, there was the most adorable wooden baby crib with deer decals. I need some ideas on what to do with these... they're no longer 'safety approved' for little ones, but there should be something... any ideas?
Everything's exciting, a grocery store with pomegranates, mangos and butternut squash, and already, things are looking up.

I hang all my problems on objects and buildings: trees, cows, farmhouses, I hang fear, anxiety, insecurity and anything that wants to creep into my mind and ask me to dwell. As soon as I pass that object or animal, the problem linked to it fades into the rearview mirror. Once they've dissolved into the past, I'm free to fall in love with interstates, motel signs, old vehicles left to rust and become a marker on a desolate highway. The people who regularly drive by here know exactly how many minutes from this old Ford their turn off is, and without recognizing the connection, start physically readjusting for the turn or slowing for a stop ahead.

I've heard many artists reflect that some of their best thinking is done in the car, and i feel like 'people like us,' people with antennae on their heads, the empaths, the sensitive and introspective, pick up too many crossed messages when we sit still; the movement lets us flow through energy, rather than getting someone's weird juju stuck on us.

A psychic once told me that Vegas has an energy all its own... Las Vegas literally means, 'the meadows,' and it's a concave valley, a bowl with mountains all the way around. She said the energy swirls here, and all the hopes they bring in on one plane after another, all the sad, exhausted hangover feelings travel back out. It's interesting, and while I'm still fresh here from traveling, I'm making an effort to observe these feelings and see how they're unique from the relaxed way I feel in Nebraska. And I'm making photographs... hundreds already, and I can't wait to download and show you these things I'm unable to put into words. Sometimes pointing the lens at something, stopping, breathing, observing and reaching out through it to grab at the feelings that don't fit into words.Jonnie Andersenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12258365828172740146noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5157980099200759598.post-24876756473081849082012-10-15T10:13:00.000-07:002012-10-15T10:15:54.252-07:00Boobies and Buses, down by the river and across the country

The SNL sketch where Matt Foley (Chris Farley) does his "living in a van down by the river" bit is one of the only sketches in history that makes me roll on the floor laughing every time I see it. His exuberance makes it timeless. I feel similarly exuberant about any living space wholly unique: converted school buses (above), converted schoolhouses, churches, treehouses, you name it. This bus even has a wood burning stove, making it perfect for frosty nights down by the river.

Wish me well, my friends, this is my final post before I get my boobies checked out (there seems to be a small lump) and with the masterminded planning of a genius, I leave right after the exam to drive 26 hours to Las Vegas for 14 scheduled photo shoots in 4 days. I'll be an exhausted bugger, but I fully intend to post some images from the trip (I'm driving through Colorado and the magical part of Utah) and some images from the shoot: it's a cowboy-kitsch-bohemian-wanderer theme, with costumes, props, and some lovely friends.Jonnie Andersenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12258365828172740146noreply@blogger.com5
